36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Meditation on scripture / bible verse meditation:
For the first time I feel inspired to make this episode a continuation of last weeks discussion. As a short refresher, Jesus was talking to the covenant people of israel. As he was talking with them he told them that being his true0 disciple and following him will give them truth which will set them free.
It is interesting to note that their first response was that they had never been slaves and they needed no freedom more than they had. Here I think is another similarity to our lives. I have noticed that we as human beings, alternate between catastrophe and complacence. We either feel we are having the worst day ever or we blow it off and don’t think much of it. Sometimes we are shown our weakness and we are compelled to receive God’s help and at others we feel that we are doing pretty good all by ourselves, thank you very much.
These people seem to be feeling the second way. When we fail to see our servitude of sin, we fail to see the miracle of God. As we preach, read, learn, and praise God for his grace we can be tempted to feel that we have always been free or that sin was never much of a difficult thing to overcome to begin with. We may find ourselves metaphorically thinking that we have never really been slave to sin. Jesus teaches us that this is not true. We cannot become what He wants of us unless we are willing to completely abandon our own complacence and feel his love fill us and change us.

Final thought -
How is it that sin causes us to be in servitude.
We may feel that it is enough to serve God and try to be good but that won’t do. He wants all of us. He wants us fully committed as a son or daughter. We can become joint heirs with Christ only if we are willing to take up the role of Children of God’s covenant. We cannot hope to keep one foot in Babalon and work a part-time servant for Jesus we must give ourselves up and truly become children of God.
